What was the purpose of a lord lieutenant
Queen’s representatives, responsible for running a particular area, responsible for raising militia if necessary, may serve on privy council
What does parliament do?
Controls taxes for queen, responsible for passing laws as well, less powerful than today, queen could ignore their advice
What was the job of the privy council
Responsible for the day to day running of the country, led by the Secretary of State,
What was the job of the Justices of peace?
Several in each county, responsible for maintaining law and order
What was the royal court?
The royal court was a collection of people who worked directly for Elizabeth. Around 1000 people who served as a mobile household. The royal court was the centre of political power and also the source of fashion and trends
What was the need for patronage?
Patronage could come in many forms; land, money or titles. All provided lots of power. The idea was to give favours to ensure loyalty and support.

1562 Elizabeth caught smallpox and this drew attention to Englands Succession problems
