- blocks flow of urine through urethra
- increase risk for retention
Symptoms of BPH
weak stream, problems starting stream, post void urgency, frequency, nocturia, inability to empty bladder, distention
Risk Factors BPH
age, presence of testes, high fat/meat diet, african american, hispanic
Hydroureter
obstruction in ureter
Hydronephrosis
dilation inside kidney
Tests: BPH
PSA, DRE, UA, PVR

prostate antigen protein elevated for prostate cancer

digital rectal exam, want to feel smooth

What causes BPH
no known cause, related to testosterone converting to DHT
5 alpha reductase inhibitors
- dutasteride
- finasteride
inhibits conversion of testosterone to DHT
Alpha Adrenergic blockers
- doxazosin
- prazosin
- tamsulsoin
- terazosin
block access muscle contractions (hypertensive meds)
Anticholinergics
- tolerodine
relax muscles in bladder, prevents urgency
SE urinary retention
