Elements & Principles of Design Flashcards
List all the elements of design.
- Line
- Shape
- Colour
- Tone
- Texture
- Form 3D
- Space
Describe what line is?
Line can be used to lead the eye to certain places within a design
Describe what colour is?
Colour is one of the most powerful and obvious elements we have at our disposal
List all the primary colours?
Red
Blue
Yellow
List all the secondary colours
Purple
Orange
Green
What does the red colour represent?
Love, Danger, Speed
What does the colour blue represent?
Cold, Calm, Water
Define Texture?
Texture is defined as the surface characteristics of an element within a design, used to create visual interest or a focal point in a design
Define Shape?
A shape is a two-dimensional enclosed object. They can be created by lines or changes in colour tone, which define shape edges
Define Space?
Space is defined as the distance or area between or around things
Define the difference between Positive & Negative Space?
Positive space is best described as the areas in a work of art that are the subjects, or areas of interest, while negative space is area around the subjects
For Example what does positive space look like on a website?
A website with a lot of positive space appears very cluttered and overwhelming; however it can contain lots of information
For Example what does negative space look like on a website?
A website with a lot of negative space creates a clean simple look. However, there is a lack of content
Define Tone?
The term Tone is used to refer to the value of light (the lightness or darkness of a colour/image)
Explain what Form 3D is?
Form is an element that defines three-dimensional objects, (just as shape describes a two dimensional objects)
Give an example of Shape & Form?
Shape = Square Form = Cube
List all the Principles Of Design?
- Balance
- Contrast (emphasis)
- Proportion (emphasis)
- Dominance
- Movement
- Pattern
- Proximity (Unity)
- Repetition (Unity)
Define Balance?
Balance creates comfort in design. Designs that are well balanced are aesthetically pleasing
List & describe Asymmetrical & Symmetrical balance?
Symmetrical is a mirror image balance. All the objects on one side of the screen are mirrored on the other side. While Asymmetrical is When there is a balance between different elements
Explain what contrast (Emphasis) is? *include an example
Contrast is the juxtaposition of opposing elements E.g. contrast in tone (light/dark)
Explain what proportion is? (Emphasis)
It is the relationship in size between various elements
manipulating the proportion of elements can draw emphasis to certain areas of the design
Define Dominance?
Dominance relates to the visual weight of the design, it is the ability to create a focal point in a design
Define Movement?
Movementis the path the viewer’s eye takes throughout a design through the use of movement, the eye can be lead to a focal point
Define Pattern?
Pattern uses the elements of design in repetition to enhance a visual image, pattern is used to increase visual excitement
Define Proximity (Unity)?
Proximity is the simplest method in making elements appear to belong together.
Define Repition (Unity)?
Repetition is the reusing of elements within your design repeating elements will create a sense of unity, consistency and cohesiveness
