Symbol
Add further meaning to themes, narrative, emotion, mood and atmosphere.
Typically found in scenography and design but can be created through character behaviour
Mood
Describes feeling and attitude
Mood is the emotional impact intended bu the playwright, director and/or other members of the creative team
Time
Time of day
Time of year
Time in history or future
All of which brought about change or maintained continuity
May include forces of political, economic, social, cultural, religious, environmental, group pressures and identity.
Character
Individual that is defined by personal qualities and/or histories
Flat characters (2D) lack depth or change in the drama text
Rounded characters (3D) feature elaborate and complex traits and histories that are changed by dramatic action in the drama event
Audience Theory
Image - how do you see your audience?
(Educated, young, old, professional)
Engagement - audience response?
(Emotional, thought-provoking, connected, feelings)
Relationship - what role does the audience play?
(Spectator, instigating, involved)
Atmosphere
The interaction between the audience and mood of drama performance
Metaphor
Creating an image or idea of one thing by saying it is something else
“He is a lion of a man”
- not literally, metaphor is used to describe traits of their character
Role
Representing a particular dominant trait (occupation, human condition or social vacation)
Roles are less in depth than character
Relationships
Qualities and connections between characters.
- fixed (unchanged)
- variable (challenged by dramatic tension)
- cooperative (friendship)
- adversarial (enemies)
- neutral (¯_(ツ)_/¯)
- non-existent (total strangers)
Language
Use of spoken or written words (ENGLISHY TYPE STUFF)
