Elements Of Design Flashcards
Colour
Colour is separated into primary (red, yellow, blue) and secondary colours.
This allows manipulation of principles of design to create atmosphere and mood.
Line (3 types)
Actual: furniture designs
Contour: delineate the borders of things, stairs and windows
Implied: Don’t physically exist, imagined by the audience
Shape
Geometric shapes appear the same when moved, rotated and reflected.
Organic shapes appear different when moved, rotated and reflected.
These can be manipulated with lines to create meanings of a scene
Space and 3D form
Positive Space: occupied
Negative Space: unoccupied
3D form employs angles in space for visual satisfaction, illusions and juxtaposition.
Size and value varies
Texture
The tactile quality of a surface. Visual for audience to imagine what items feel like, implied.
Layers are important for dynamic and energy of a space and to give a 3D illusion
Value
Often used by designers to help define shapes and change quality of colour.
Value can be used to identify economic status
Psychologically, value affects emotion and instinct.
