Elements and atomic structure Flashcards
what are elements?
they are substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means and as the basic building blocks of all substances
how many types of atoms are in an element?
1 type
nucleus
in the centre of the atom and contains protons and neutrons
proton - position, mass and charge
position: nucleus
mass: 1 amu
charge: positive 1
neutron - position, mass and charge
position: nucleus
mass: 1 amu
charge: neutral 0
electron - position, mass and charge
position: shells
mass: negligible
charge: negative -1
atoms charge?
they have no overall electrical charge
atomic number
the number of protons in the nucleus (equal to the number of electrons) the bottom number on an element
mass number
the number of protons and neutrons added together
( the top number on the element)
isotopes
same number of protons, different number of neutrons
electronic structures what does the group number mean
number of electrons in outer shell
electronic structures what does the period number mean
number of electron shells
where are metals found in the periodic table
to the left and centre of the periodic table
where are non metals found in the periodic table
to the right of the periodic table
how are the elements arranged in the periodic table
in order of increasing atomic number
