Elements Flashcards
Element
each of more than one hundred substances that cannot be chemically inter converted or broken down into simpler substances and are primary constituents of matter. Each element is distinguished by its atomic number, the number of protons in the nuclei of its atoms.
Pure Substance
Pure substances are defined as substances that are made of only one type of atom or molecule. The purity of a substance is the measure of the extent to which a given substance is pure. The physical properties of a pure substance include well-defined melting and boiling points.
Metals
a solid material that is typically hard, shiny, malleable, fusible, and ductile, with good electrical and thermal conductivity
Nonmetals
an element or substance that is not a metal.
Metalloids
an element whose properties are intermediate between those of metals and solid nonmetals. They are electrical semiconductors.
Compound
a thing that is composed of two or more separate elements
Mixture
a substance made by mixing other substances together.
Solution
a liquid mixture in which the minor component (the solute) is uniformly distributed within the major component (the solvent).
Solute
the minor component in a solution, dissolved in the solvent.
Solvent
able to dissolve other substances.
Concentration
the action or power of focusing one’s attention or mental effort.
Solubility
is the property of a solid, liquid, or gaseous chemical substance called solute to dissolve in a solid, liquid, or gaseous solvent.
Suspension
the action of suspending someone or something or the condition of being suspended, in particular.
Colloid
a homogeneous, noncrystalline substance consisting of large molecules or ultramicroscopic particles of one substance dispersed through a second substance. Colloids include gels, sols, and emulsions; the particles do not settle and cannot be separated out by ordinary filtering or centrifuging like those in a suspension.
