Chapter 2 Sec. 1-3 Flashcards
States of Matter
One of the four principal conditions in which matter exists.
Solid
firm and stable in shape; not liquid or fluid.
Liquid
having a consistency like that of water or oil, i.e., flowing freely but of constant volume.
Surface Tension
the tension of the surface film of a liquid caused by the attraction of the particles in the surface layer by the bulk of the liquid, which tends to minimize surface area.
Viscosity
the state of being thick, sticky, and semi fluid in consistency, due to internal friction.
Gas
an air like fluid substance which expands freely to fill any space available, irrespective of its quantity.
Temperature
the degree or intensity of heat present in a substance or object, especially as expressed according to a comparative scale and shown by a thermometer or perceived by touch.
Volume
the amount of space that a substance or object occupies, or that is enclosed within a container, especially when great.
Pressure
the continuous physical force exerted on or against an object by something in contact with it.
Boyle’s Law
is a law about ideal gases.
Charles’s Law
a statement in physics.
Change of State
a change from one state to another without a change in chemical composition.
Melting
make or become liquefied by heat.
Evaporation
The changing of a liquid into a gas, often under the influence of heat.
Boiling
he action of bringing a liquid to the temperature at which it bubbles and turns to vapor.
