Element 6 Flashcards
What is a systematic approach to managing road safety risks (and health and safety in general)?
Plan, Do, Check, Act.
What would typically be included in a training programme for a driver before he drives a vehicle on a new construction site?
The layout of the workplace routes.
• How and where to report faults or hazards.
• Procedures for reporting accidents.
• How to use the vehicle and equipment safely.
• Information about, for example, dangers, speed limits, parking and loading areas, and procedures.
• What personal protective equipment they need for the task they are going to do, and how to use it.
• Information on the structure and level of supervision that will apply, and the penalties if they fail to follow instructions and safe working practices.
• How to follow any emergency procedures.
Collision with moving vehicles is the most common cause of workplace vehicle accidents. What are the factors commonly involved?
- Poor visibility
- Inadequate brakes (possibly from lack of maintenance)
- Poor design of site layout or pedestrian segregation/walkways
- Lack of driver competence due to poor or inadequate training
- Carelessly parked vehicles (e.g., being parked on a slope without being adequately secured)
- Unsafe coupling and uncoupling of trailers
What are the controls that an organisation can put in place to ensure transport safety, which respect to safe vehicles?
- Vision aids / mirrors on vehicles
- Correct vehicle for task
- Flashing beacons on vehicles
- Reversing cameras / alarms fitted to vehicles
- Good maintenance of vehicle
- Banksman if reversing required
What are the controls that an organisation can put in place to ensure transport safety, which respect to a safe site.
- Segregation, vehicles and pedestrians
- Pedestrian crossing points
- Adequate signage / road markings
- One-way systems/turning circles
- Adequate lighting
- Mirrors on blind corners
- Roads adequate and in good condition
What are the things that should be considered when planning for safe traffic routes on a construction site?
- Road surfaces and drainage
- Visibility
- Speed
- Pedestrian segregation
- Road markings and signs
- Lighting
What are the 3 things to consider for managing work-related driving road safety risks?
Safe driver
• Safe vehicle
• Safe journey planning
