Electrostatics Flashcards
Neutral
Same no. Of protons and electrons
Positively charged
Electrons lost
Negatively charged
Electrons gained
Insulator
Substance that does not allow the flow of charge to go through it
Conductor
Substance that does allow the flow of charge through it
Triboeletric series
Tells us what charge materials are likely to become
Materials more like plastic?
Become negatively charged ( gain electron )
Materials more like cloth tend to ?
become positivity charged ( lose electron )
Polarsation
Takes place when an uncharged object becomes attracted to a charged object.
Uncharged object is induced wth a charge
Electrostatic forces
Forces between charges
When friction takes place one item becomes positively charged and one becomes negatively
Two factors that that affect electrostatic force between 2 objects
1) magnitude of charges - greater charge = greater electrostatic
2) distance between charges - greater distance = smaller electrostatic force
Law of conservation of charge
Net charge of an isolated system remains constant during any physical process
Quantisation of charge
Any charge in the universe consist of an interger multiple of the charge of the electron
Columb
Packet of electrons
