Electronics: How Electricity Works Flashcards
The 2 requirements for Electricity to flow
Needs a Path and a Push
What is a circuit?
a circuit is any arrangement that allows for electrical current to flow. An
Load
The device powered by a circuit
What does a basic circuit consist out of?
basic circuit consists of a power supply (the battery), a load (the lamp), and the wire.
What is Voltage?
It is the Electromotive Force (emf) or “push” that gets electrons jumping from one atom to another, creating a flow of current
Which sources can generate an emf?
Chemical reactions Electromagnetic generators Photovoltaic cells Generators Friction Thrmoelectrial sources
What is induction?
Generating a current by rotating a conductive metal in a magnetic field.
eg.) an generator that converst mechanical energy to electrical energy
How do generators work?
They use turbines to generate a current through the process of induction, converting mechanical energy into electical energy
What are some ways to turn the turbines of generators
water
Steam (Coal, Atomic)
Wind
Who discovered the principle of induction?
Micheal Farraday
What does voltage measure?
The force required to move electricity between two points on a circuit, or the potential difference between those two points
Can voltage be measured at a single point?
No, It is always measured across two points as it is a measure of the potential difference between two points
What is Current?
Current is a measure of the electrons moving through a circuit?
What is a Coulomb?
a set unit of electrons: 6.25 x 10( to the power of 18)
what is an Ampere?
a coulomb of current that moves through a point in one second
