Electronic configuration Flashcards
1
Q
How do you use groups and periods to calculate the electronic configuration of an atom
A
- Look at the group that the element is in, draw that number of shells around the nucleus
- Look at the period that the element is in, draw that number of electrons in the outer shell
- Fill in the rest of the shells using the shell rule
2
Q
How many electrons are allowed in the first shell
A
2 (unless it is the only shell)
3
Q
How many electrons are allowed in the second shell
A
8 (unless it is the outer shell)
4
Q
How many electrons are allowed in the third shell
A
8 (unless it is the outer shell)
