electronic config Flashcards
orbital
can hold up to two electrons
how do you fill up orbitals
make sure each box in the sublevel is singly filled before doubly filling them. make sure each box in the sublevel is doubly filled before filling up the next sublevel
how many orbitals in the s sublevel
1 (2 electrons all in all)
how many orbitals in the p sublevel
3 (6 electrons all in all)
how many orbitals in the d sublevel
5 (10 electrons all in all)
how many orbitals in the f sublevel
7 (14 electrons all in all)
how do you draw the afbau diagram
four vertical lines: 1s-7s, 2p-7p, 3d-6d, and 4f-5f. make sure the numbers are aligned w each other
Principal Quantum Number (n)
What it describes: The energy level or shell of the electron.
Possible values: Positive integers (1, 2, 3…).
Angular Momentum Quantum Number (l)
What it describes: The shape of the orbital (sublevel).
Possible values: From 0 to (n-1).
what shape would l = 0 be
s-orbital (sphere).
what shape would l = 1 be
p-orbital (dumbell)
what shape would l = 2 be
d-orbital (clover)
what shape would l = 3 be
f-orbital (complex shape)
Magnetic Quantum Number (mₗ)
What it describes: The orientation of the orbital in space.
Possible values: From -l to +l (including 0).
Spin Quantum Number (mₛ)
What it describes: The direction of the electron’s spin.
Possible values: +½ (spin up) or -½ (spin down)
