Electronegativity Flashcards
electronegativity
the ability for an atom to attract electrons towards itself in a covalent bond
as you go further up and right you go on the periodic table what happens ?
the more electronegative the element is
The bigger the difference in electronegativity ..
the more ionic the compound will be. A different of zero will be purely covalent.
How does electronegativity increase across a period ?
nuclear charge increases but the number of shielding electrons remain constant so the attraction for the shared electron pair increases
How does electronegativity decrease down a group ?
the nuclear charge increases, there is an increase in the number of shielding electrons and the shared electron pairs is further from the nucleus so it attracted less strongly
