Electron configuration, energy levels Flashcards
Energy Levels
A specific amount of energy which
an electron in an atom can possess
• Energy levels are represented by the letter “n”
Quantum:
the energy difference between two
particular energy levels
Orbital:
Actual region of space that is occupied by an
e‐ in a particular energy level
Shell:
Set of all orbitals having the same n‐value at
the same energy level
Subshell:
set of orbitals of the same type
Name the four different types of orbitals
s, p, d, f
How many orbitals does each of the subshells have?
‐ A ‘s’ subshell consists of 1 s orbital
‐ A ‘p’ subshell consists of 3 p orbitals
‐ A ‘d’ subshell consists of 5 d orbitals
‐ A ‘f’ subshell consists of 7 f orbitals
How many electrons can each subshell hold?
‐ s subshell can hold: 2
‐ p subshell can hold: 6
‐ d subshell can hold: 10
‐ f subshell can hold: 14
