Electron Configuration Flashcards
Define orbital
Region where an electron/electrons are most likely found
What are the 4 types of sub-shells?
s, p, d, f (f not in syllabus)
Describe the s sub-shell.
Contains one orbital
Spherical shape
Can hold 2 electrons
Describe the p sub-shell.
Dumbbell-shaped
Contains 3 orbitals (px, py, pz)
Each orbital can hold 2 electrons (6 in total)
Describe the electron configuration.
1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d10 4p6…
NB! Fill 4s before 3d (3d has higher energy than 4s), therefore fill 5s before 4d and so on
What is the rule for electron configuration of ions?
Always remove the electron from the orbitals that are furthest away from the nucleus
Define free radicals
A species with one or more unpaired electrons
Free radicals are represented with a dot
