Q

Describe the period 3 elements reactions with water.

A

2Na + 2H2O -> 2NaOH + H2 NaOH is very alkali - high pH
Mg + 2H2O -> Mg(OH)2 + H2 Slow reaction, white precipitate/suspension of Mg(OH)2 is observed, less alkali
2Al + 3H2O -> Al2O3 + 3H2 Reacts slowly due to protective oxide layer
Cl2 + H2O -> HCl + HOCl Disproportionation reaction (oxidation and reduction)

Magnesium reacts differently with cold water and steam
Cold water: Mg + 2H2O -> Mg(OH)2 + H2 this is a slow reaction
Steam: Mg + H2O -> MgO this reaction is much faster
