electromagnetism Magnetism & Electromagnetism Flashcards
What are the poles of a magnet?
North & south poles
What happens when two magnets are brought close to each other?
The alike poles repel while the unalike attract.
What happens when alike poles of magnets are brought together?
They repel eachother
What type of force is magnetism an example of?
Magnetic Force
What is a permanent magnet?
A magnet where it’s magnetic pull cannot be turned on or off
What is a induced / temporary magnet?
A magnet where it’s magnetic pull CAN be turned on or off
What happens to an induced magnet when it’s taken out of an magnetic field?
It looses its magnetism
What is the only force that is caused by an induced magnet?
A force of attraction
What is a magnetic field?
A magnetic field is when a force acts on another magnet
What does the strength of a magnetic field depend on when a current flows through a wire?
The size of the current & The distance of the wire
What is a Solenoid?
A coil wire
What happens to the magnetic field when the wire is shaped into a solenoid?
It becomes stronger
Describe the shape around the magnetic field of a solenoid:
It’s strong and uniform (it has the same strength and direction at every point)
How can the strength of a solenoid be increased?
By adding an iron core
What is an electromagnet?
A solenoid with an iron core
