Cells & Battery Charging Flashcards
What is a cell?
A cell is a component that stores and provides electrical energy as a result of chemical reaction
Name two types of cells?
Primary and Secondary
What cell can and cannot be recharged?
The primary cell cannot be recharged while the secondary can be recharged
What are the two main faults of a cell?
Local action and Polarization
What occurs during local action?
The electrolytes attack the impulses in the zinc, corroding the electrode.
What occurs during polarization?
The bubbles of hydrogen gas can form around the carbon electrode and resist the flow of current
short answer The bubble of hydrogen gas resists the flow of current
Why is the zinc electrode coated with mercury?
To minimize local action
What is the carbon plate surrounded with/
It is surrounded with a depolarizing agent
What is battery testing?
Test used to determine the level of charge in a secondary cell.
Name two types of battery test.
The Hydrometer Test and the High-rate Discharge Test
What are 5 methods of battery charging?
Trickle charging, constant - voltage charging, constant - current charging, floating system and boost charging
