Electromagnetism Flashcards
when revising this topic watch back the videos its a visual topic
What is electromagnetism?
when an electric current produce their own magnetic field
how do the magnetic field lines act around a wire?
magnetic field lines are circular around the wire and are more dense the closer they are to the wire/ the stronger the magnetic field is
when using the right hand rule what does the thumb represent?
thumb - direction the current is flowing
What are the steps to the right hand rule?
point your thumb in the way the current is flowing and curve your hand as if into a fist, the way your fingers point is the way the magnetic field points
what is an electromagnet?
a coil with an iron core
name two characteristics of an electromagnet
they can be turned on and off
the direction of the magnetic field can change by reversing the way the current is flowing
name 4 ways to increase an electromagnet’s strength
increase the amount of turns
decrease the length and maintain the amount of turns
increase the current
add an iron core
why does increasing an iron core increase the strength of an electromagnet?
iron is a magnetic material so when it’s surrounded by an electromagnet it becomes magnetized
