What are Electromagnetic (EM) waves?
Transverse waves.
What are Em waves generated by?
a variety of changes in atoms and their nuclei, give a large range of frequencies.
How are Radio waves transmitted?
through the body without being absorbed.
Properties of Microwaves:
can be absorbed, causing of heating cells, may be dangerous.
Properties of Infrared:
mostly reflected or absorbed by the skin, causing some heating
Properties of Visible light:
mostly reflected or absorbed
Properties of UV:
absorbed by skin, has a higher frequency so potentially more dangerous
Properties of X rays and Gamma rays:
ionising. have really high frequencies which means even more energy which cause even more damage.
What is the use of Radio Waves?
Communication and Broadcasting
What do Satellites do?
Get sent Microwaves or Radio waves then send it back to Earth.
How do Microwave ovens work?
microwaves are abosorbed by water molecules in food.
What can Infrared be used for?
Increase or monitor temp
Thermal imaging
Electric heaters
What can Visible light be used for?
Photography
What can Ultraviolet be used for?
Fluorescent lamps,
What are X rays used for?
to see inside things
