electromagnetic spectrum and rarefraction Flashcards
what are radio waves for?
radio signals, wifi
what are microwaves for?
cooking (they’re absorbed by water)
what are infrared rays used for?
cooking (absorbed by the food’s surface)
what are uv rays used for?
tanning (they cause skin cancer)
what are x-rays for?
medical (also dangerous)
what are gamma rays used for? how are they produced?
medical treatments, steralising (dangerous)
what are all em waves emitted and absorbed from?
electrons
how do electrons lose energy?
as em waves
what happens if the wave has a high frequency?
the energy is higher and the wavelength is shorter
which 3 em rays are examples of ionising radiation?
uv, x-ray, gamma
what happens when waves enter a new medium (material)
they change speed, and therefore thier angle too
whats the normal line?
the line drawn perpendicular to the surface (straight line across rectangle)
what happens if the wave slows down?
it bends towards the normal
whats the angle of rarefraction?
angle inside rectangle
what’s the angle on incidence?
angle outside of rectangle
