Q

what are the differences between a incandescent, flourescent and laser light?

A

an incandescent light is a light in which it has filiment through which elcectricity flows through. a floureescent light is when the electric current excites the mercury causing a light to for, and a laser light makes the light only one color and it contains only one wavelength.the laser light is also coherent, meaning the light waves are perfectly parellel and there crests and troughs line up leaving a straight line.

Q

how can atoms be made to emit light?

A

when the electron in the atom absorbs a photon it gains energy. when the electron returns to its normal state, it lets go of a proton and loses energy. that energy is in the form of light

Q

What is white light?

What is diffraction?

A

WHITE LIGHT IS ALL THE FREQUENCIES OF ROYGBIV (red, orange, yellow, grren, blue, ___, and vioet)TOGETHER. DIFFRACTION BREAKS UP ROYGBIV INTO ITS FREQUENCIES

Q

If I were planning a trip to the zoo and was going to be walking around in the sun all day… should I wear a black or white t-shirt? WHY? ?

A

WHITE SHIRT – IT REFLECTS ALL FREQUENCIES OF LIGHT. (BLACK – ABSORBS ALL FREQUENCIES OF LIGHT)

List the EM spectrum in order starting with the highest frequencies moving to the lowest.

A

GAMMA, X-RAY, ULTRAVIOLET, VISUAL LIGHT, INFRARED LIGHT, MICROWAVES, RADIO WAVES

22
Q

What do ALL waves transfer?

A
  • ENERGY
23
Q

The amplitude of a wave shows how much ________ a wave is carrying?

A

ENERGY

24
Q

What is the property that is the highest part of a wave?

What is the property that is the lowest part of a wave?

A

CREST, TROUGH

25
Q

What is the relationship between wavelength and frequency?

A

LONGER WAVELENGTH = LOWER FREQUENCY, SHORTER WAVELENGTH = HIGHER FREQUENCY

26
Q

If you found an unknown wave how could you identify what kind of wave it is? Name 3 things you could do!

A

MEASURE WAVELENGTH, MEASURE FREQUENCY, MEASURE AMPLITUDE

27
Q

What does the word Perpendicular Mean and how does it relate to waves?

A

CREATES A RIGHT ANGLE OR 90 DEGREE ANGLE – THE WAVE MOVES IN A PERPENDICULAR MOTION OF THE DISTURBANCE. (TRANSVERSE)

28
Q

What does the word parallel mean and how does that relate to waves?

A

TWO LINES THAT WILL NEVER CROSS – THE WAVE MOVES IN A PARALLEL MOTION OF THE DISTURBANCE. (LONGITUDINAL)

29
Q

A

TRANSVERSE

30
Q

A slinky is an example of what type of wave??

A
  • LONGITUDINAL
31
Q

What type of waves can travel through empty space? EXPLAIN!

A

LIGHT WAVES – SUNLIGHT CAN TRAVEL THROUGH THE EMPTY SPACE OF THE UNIVERSE AND MAKE ITS WAY TO EARTH

32
Q

what is gas discharge light?

A

when an electric current is sent through certain gases, electrons in the gas are now excited. when the electrons return to an unexcited state, they send out light.
