waves Flashcards
what does amplitude describe?
how loud or soft a sound is
how can you meausre the size of the amplitude?
by measuring the distance between the center of the wave to the crest
what is wavelength
the distance from crest to crest or trough to trough
what is frequency and what is it measured in?
frequency is the number of waves that pass a certain point in a fixed amout of time
frequency is also measured in hertz
if a sound has more energy what does it tell us about it frequency?
it has a high frequency
what is pitch?
how high or low a sound is
why can a dog hear a dog whistle but humans can’t?
dogs can hear sounds with a higher frequency up to 35,000 hertz while humans can hear frequencys between 20 and 20,000 hertz
what is a prism?
a glass figure with sides shaped as a triangle
what appens to white light as it enters and leaves the prism
it bends and refracts
how are rainbows formed?
when sunlight shines on water vapor in the air
what are the 3 primary colors of light?
red, green, and blue
if yellow light is not reflected then how do you see it?
because my brain interprepts the combination of greeen and red to be yellow
what are xrays and gamma rays mainly used for?
medical therapy
what part of the spectrum is the only part we can see?
the middle
what makes each color of the rainbow different?
the different wavelength of light
