Electrolyte imbalances Flashcards
Causes of hyponatraemia
Renal failure, Heart failure, Liver failure, Diarrhoea, Vomiting, Small bowel obstruction, Addison’s disease, SIADH, Hyperglycaemia, Fluid overload, Diuretics, PPIs
Symptoms of hyponatraemia
Nausea, Anorexia, Headache, Confusion, Weakness, Seizures
Investigations for hyponatraemia
Bloods: U+Es, BNP, Osmolarity
Urine dip/osmolarity
Blood findings with hyponatraemia
U+Es: Raised Na, Cr, Urea
Urine dip finding with hyponatraemia
Protein
Management of hyponatraemia
Treat the cause
Medical: 0.9% NaCl, ADH antagonists, Oral Na
Define hypernatraemia
Na >146mmol/L
Causes of hypernatraemia
Sweat, Diarrhoea, Vomiting, Burns, Urinary loss, Diabetes insipidus, Aldosteronism, Excess saline
Hypovolemic causes of hypernatraemia
Sweat, Diarrhoea, Vomiting, Burns, Urinary loss
Euvolemic cause of hypernatraemia
Diabetes insipidus
Hypervolemic cause of hypernatraemia
Aldosteronism, Excess saline
Symptoms of hypernatraemia
Lethargy, Weakness, Confusion, Fits, Nausea, Thirst
Investigations for hypernatraemia
Bloods: U+Es, Osmolarity
Urine osmolarity
Blood findings with hypernatraemia
U+Es: Raised Na and Urea
Osmolarity: Raised
Management of hypernatraemia
Conservative: Increase oral intake
Medical: IV 0.9% NaCl
Complication of rapid Na correction
Cerebral oedema
Define hyperkalaemia
K >5.5mmol/L
Causes of hyperkalaemia
Renal failure, Acidosis, K sparing diuretics, ACE inhibitors, Burns, Crush injuries, Addison’s disease
Drugs that cause hyperkalaemia
K sparing diuretics, ACE inhibitors
Common arrhythmias caused by hyperkalaemia
VF, Bradyarrhythmia
