Electrolysis Flashcards
What is electrolysis?
When electricity breaks down substances
What happens when an ionic solid is melted or dissolved in water?
It’s ionic bonds break
What is an electrolyte?
An ionic substance with freely moving ions that can conduct electricity
What charge do cathodes have?
Negative
What charge do anodes have?
Positive
How could u show ions migrating to opposite charges electrodes?
Purple potassium manganate crystal on a piece of damp filter paper attached to a microscope slide and connected to dc power supply
What happens at the anode?
Negative ions lose electrons (oxidation)
What happens at the cathode?
Electrons are transferred from the electrode to the positive ions (reduction)
What does the transfer of electrons do to ions?
Changes charged ions into atoms or molecules, resulting in chemical changes at the electrodes
