Electrolysis Flashcards
What is electrolysis?
It is the breaking down of a substance using electricity. Causing it to decompose
What is OILRIG
Oxidation Is Loss Reduction Is Gain
What are positive and negative ions called?
Positive ions are cation - move to the cathode
Negative ions are anions - move to anode
What are half equations?
They show how the electrons are transferred during electrolysis .
How do you set up a electrochemical cell?
You need a circuit , anode, cathode, electrolyte, a power source and wires that connect the electrodes.
How do you set up a electrolysis if the electrolyte is a solution?
1) get two inert electrodes
2) clean surface of electrodes
3) don’t touch the surfaces of the electrodes - could transfer grease
4) place electrodes into a beaker filled with electrolyte
5) connect using crocodile clips and wired, turn on power.
How do you set up electrolysis if the electrolyte is a molten ionic substance?
1) put the substance in a crucible
2) heat until the solid is molten - use fume cupboard
3) dip both electrodes (inert) into the electrolyte
4) connect the electrodes to a power supply using wires and clips ,
