Electrolysis Flashcards
What is electrolysis?
Electrolysis is the breaking down of a compound using electricity.
What goes to the cathode?
Positive ions (cathodes) go to the negative electrode (cathode)
What happens at the cathode?
If H+ ions and metal ions are present hydrogen gas will be produced if the metal is less reactive than hydrogen. If the metal is less reactive than pure metal will be produced.
What goes to the anode?
Negative (anions) go to the positive electrode (anode)
What happens at the anode?
If OH- and halide ions are present molecules of chlorine bromine or iodine will be produced. If no halide ions are present then oxygen will be formed.
What is oil rig?
Oxidation Is Loss Reduction Is Gain
How do you do a half equation?
1) put oxidised things on one side and reduced things on the other
2) balance the number of atoms
3) then add electrons on to one side and balance up the charges
What are the products of hydrochloric acid electrolysis?
