electrolysis ⚡️ Flashcards
What is electrolysis
The decomposition of a substance using electricity
Anode meaning
The positive electrode used in the electrolysis. Oxidation always occurs at the anode.
Cathode meaning
The negative electrode used in electrolysis. Reduction always occurs at the cathode.
oxidation
Loss of electrons from a substance
Reduction
Gain of electrons by a substance
Electrode meaning
A solid electrical conductor that forms an electrical connection between the electrolyte and the electrical circuit in electrolysis
What does cryolite do?
- dissolves alumina
-lowers melting point of the electrolyte
Why do carbon anodes need to be replaced frequently?
The carbon burns away over time

What is an electrolyte
An electrolyte is a liquid containing a compound that conducts electricity
- a molten salt
- a solution of an ionic salt
Cation
Positive ion
Anion
Negative ion
Cathode half equation for aqueous solutions
2H+ -> H2
Anode half equation
4OH- -> O2 + 2H2O + 4e-
Aqueous solutions - product at anode
Oxygen gas
