Electrolysis Flashcards
What is electrolysis
Use of electrical current to break down compounds containing ions into their constituent elements
What is substance being broken down called
Electrolyte
Where do negatively charged ions go
Move to anode(positive electrode)
Where do positively charged ions go
Move to cathode(negative electrode)
What does electrolysis require
Lots of heat and electrical energy
Expensive
How is aluminium obtained
By electrolysis of aluminium oxide mixed with cryolite
What is cryolite
A compound of aluminium
How does the cryolite work
Lowers melting point of aluminium oxide meaning less energy required and cheaper
Where does aluminium form
Negative electrode (cathode)
Oxygen gas
Positive electrode(anode)
Reacts with carbon forming carbon dioxide
Electrolysis in aqueous solutions
Ionic compounds dissolved in water, slightly harder to predict products of electrolysis
Negative electrode(cathode)
Hydrogen produced if metal is more reactive than hydrogen
Metal produced if metal is less reactive than hydrogen
Positive electrode( anode)
Oxygen produced unless solution contains halide ions
If Halide ions present then halogen produced
