Electrolyisis Flashcards

1
Q

Facts about electrolysis

A
  • solid ionic compounds can’t conduct electricity
= ions are locked in place and can’t move
When ionic compounds melted or dissolved forces attraction broken and ions free to move
    = now conduct electricity

Q

Describe process of electrolysis

A
  • Positive Pb ions attracted to negative electrode
  • Pb now gain two electrons to form Pb atoms
    = reduction reaction

Q

Use of cryolite

A

Lowers melting point
= won’t require as much energy to melt

17
Q

How is Co2 produced at the anode?

A

Anodes are made of graphite, which is a type of carbon
= oxygen is produced at the anode
= oxygen reacts with anode
