Atomic Numbers Flashcards
Define an isotope
Atoms of an element with different numbers of neutrons
What are group 0
Noble gases
Describe noble gases
Very unreactive elements
= full outer energy shell
Boiling points increase as relative atomic masses increase
Describe metals reactions
When they react they lose electrons to achieve a full outer energy level
What are group 1 called
Alkali metals
Have one electron in their outer shell
Describe electrons in group 1
As we move down the group
= outer electron is less attracted to the nucleus and easier to lose
= because there’s a greater distance between positive nucleus and negative outer electron
What is group 7
Halogens
Describe what group 7 forms
Form molecules with two atoms joined by a covalent bond
What happens when group 7 react with metals
Form ionic compounds
Gain one electron and become -1 ion
Describe an alkali metal
Soft metals
Relatively low melting points
Low density
React rapidly with oxygen, chlorine and water
Form 1+ ion
Describe a transition element
Hard and strong metals
High melting point
High density
Much less reactive than group 1
Can form ions with different charges
