  • Group 1A: always +1
  • Group 2A: always +2
  • Halogens: usually -1 but +1 with oxygen
  • Monoatomic ions: ion charge
  • H: +1 with nonmetal, -1 with metal
  • O: usually -2 but -1 in H2O2
  • F: Always -1
  • Sum of oxidation numbers for a neutral compound: 0
  • Sum of oxidation number for polyatomic ion = ion charge
