ELECTROCHEMISTRY Flashcards
OIL
Oxidation is LOSS of electrons
RIG
Reduction is GAIN of electrons
How do you know which is oxidized, reduced, oxidizing agent, reducing agent
One that is being oxidized will be a reducing agent, and one that is being reduced will be an oxidizing agent
Oxidation state rules (10)
- Element by itself: 0
- Group 1A: always +1
- Group 2A: always +2
- Halogens: usually -1 but +1 with oxygen
- Monoatomic ions: ion charge
- H: +1 with nonmetal, -1 with metal
- O: usually -2 but -1 in H2O2
- F: Always -1
- Sum of oxidation numbers for a neutral compound: 0
- Sum of oxidation number for polyatomic ion = ion charge
E°cell formula
E°cell = E°cathode - E°anode
Mass formula
A (current) x T (seconds) x molar mass/F x ne (moles of electron)
Galvanic (voltanic cell) (3)
- Converts chemical energy to electrical energy
- 1/2 reaction occurs in separate electrode
- Oxidation: anode
Reduction: cathode
Electrolytic cell (3)
- Converts electrical energy to chemical energy
- Anode on + terminal battery
- Cathode on - terminal battery
Which equation is longer, oxidation or reduction
Oxidation is shorter, reduction is longer
Galvanic cell notation
Anode (left) then cathode (right)
Single line
Separates 2 phases within cell
Double line
Separates each end of salt bridge
Pt(s)
Solid is present
