Electricity Review Flashcards
What is electric current?
It is an electric charge that flows quickly through a conductor in a closed pathway.
Which particle in the atom carries electricity?
Electrons
List the Function and one example of a source of electrical energy
Provides energy for electrons to move through the circuit. Cell/battery
List the Function and one example of an electrical load
Converts electrical energy to another form (ex. Heat, light). Light bulb/toaster/T.V
List the Function and one example of control device
Allows or stops the flow of electrons.
Light switch/dimmer switch/timer
List the Function and one example of connectors
Provides a path for electrons to flow. Conducting wire
In a closed circuit:
Will electricity flow?
Is the switch on or off?
YES
ON
In an open circuit:
Will electricity flow?
Is the switch on of off
NO
OFF
What is a series circuit?
Electron only travels along 1 path.
If one device stops working, the rest will all go off.
List three examples of electrical that are connected in series.
Lawnmower/freezer/refrigerator
What is a parallel circuit?
It has two or more paths for the electricity to flow.
List three places that are connected in parallel
Home/school/grocery store
Insulator definition and example
A material in which electrons cannot move easily from one atom to another.
Non metal(wood, rubber, plastic)
Conductor definition and example
A material in which electrons can move easily between atoms.
Metals (Copper, sliver, aluminum)
What device is used to measure current in an electric circuit?
How is this device connected to a circuit?
Ammeter
In series
