Q

Explain the difference between a producer and a consumer? List two examples of each.

A

A producer is an organism that makes its own food using the sun’s energy. (Grass and trees)

16
Q

Why are photosynthesis and cellular respiration considered complementary processes?

A

They both consume and create the same substance but in different ways. (One can’t happen without the other)

Q

What is the difference between a habitat and an ecological niche?

A

A habitat is the environment where an organism lives. And an ecological niche is the function a species serves in its ecosystem this includes where it lives what it eats and how it behaves.

18
Q

What is a herbivore and what is an example?

A

A herbivore is a consumer that only eats plants or other producers an example would be a grasshopper

19
Q

What is an omnivore and what is an example?

A

An omnivore is a consumer that eats both producers and consumers and example would be a pig or a duck.

20
Q

What is a carnivore and an example?

A

A carnivore is a consumer that eats only other consumers and an example would be a lion or an alligator.

21
Q

What is a decomposer and an example?

A

A decomposer is an animal that eats dead or decaying organisms an example would be a vulture.

22
Q

What is the difference between a food chain and a food web? Which is a better representation of feeding relationships in an ecosystem.

A

A food chain shows a feeding relationship among species in an ecosystem.
A food web is a representation of feeding relationships within a community. a food web is made up of a series of interconnecting food chains.

23
Q

What is an example of a producer

A

Grass, plant, tree, bush, shrub, lettuce

24
Q

What is an example of a herbivore

A

Grasshopper

25
Q

What is an example of a primary consumer

A

Mice, deer

26
Q

What is an example of a secondary consumer

A

Weasel, snake

27
Q

What is an example of a tertiary consumer

A

Fox, owl, killer whale

28
Q

What is a trophic level?

A

The level of an organism in an ecosystem depending on its feeding position along a food chain.

29
Q

How much energy is transferred to the next trophic level

A

10%

30
Q

What is trophic efficiency? Why is energy transfer up the food chain considered inefficient?

A

A measure of the amount of energy or biomass transferred from one trophic level to the next higher trophic level.

31
Q

Definition of bioaccumulation

A

Bioaccumulation is the ingestion of toxins at a rate faster than they are eliminated.

32
Q

Definition of biomagnificaton

A

Biomagnification is the increase in the concentration of a toxin as it moves from one trophic level to the next.

33
Q

What is exponential growth curve

A

Exponential growth is growth that is accelerated growth that produces a J-shaped curve when the population is graphed against time.

34
Q

What is limiting factors? Identify an example of a biotic limiting factor and an abiotic limiting factors?

A

Any factor that restricts the size of a population or where it can live. Biotic-hunting Abiotic-forest fires

35
Q

Define carrying capacity

A

The maximum population size of a species that a given ecosystem can sustain.

36
Q

Define equilibrium definition

A

A state in which opposing forces or influences are balanced.

37
Q

Prey-Predator relationship (define prey and predictor)

A

Prey- an organism that is consumed
Predator- organism that eats the prey

38
Q

Define competition

A

When 2 or more organisms compete for the same resource in the same location at the same time.

39
Q

Define symbiosis

A

The interaction between members of two different species that live together in close association

40
Q

Define biodiversity

A

The number of different species living in a given area or ecosystem

41
Q

What is a biodiversity hotspot? Where can these be found?

A

An area, usually undisturbed, of very high biodiversity (equator)

42
Q

Threats to biodiversity

A

Removing trees, pollution, strip mining

43
Q

What’s the difference between a sustainable and unsustainable ecosystem.

A

Sustainable ecosystem- an ecosystem that is capable of withstanding a pressure and giving support to a variety of organisms.
Unsustainable ecosystem- is when they are constantly affected by pollution, deforestation, and overconsumption of resources.

44
Q

What is an ecological footprint and how can you reduce it?

A

An ecological footprint is the measure of the impact of an individual or a population on the environment in terms of energy consumption, land use and waste production.
We can reduce our ecological footprint by walking to school, taking shorter showers, and using reusable products.
