Electricity In The Hone Flashcards
Describe the neutral wire.
> blue
> on the left of the plug
What colour is the earth wire?
> green and yellow
Why do some appliances have a 2 cord cable?
> because they are double insulated ( their outer casing is plastic)
> and so do not need the earth wire
What happens if the live wire touches the metal casing?
> the earth wire directs the current away from the casing towards the ground
> earth wire has low resistance, high current which blows the fuse, breaking the circuit
What does RCCB stand for?
Residual current circuit breaker
How does an RCCB work?
It detects a change in current between the live and neutral wires, immediately tripping the circuit and stopping the current from flowing.
What are the advantages of an RCCB over a fuse?
> it breaks the circuit immediately
> it can be easily re-set at the flick of a switch
Describe the live wire.
> brown
> on the right of the plug
Define PD?
> amount of energy transferred per Coulomb of charge.
