electricity in the home Flashcards
what is ac?
current that constantly changes direction alternating current because of alternating voltage
what is dc?
current that constantly flows in the same direction direct current
what is the voltage and hertz of UK mains power?
230V.
50hz.
what is hertz hz
how many times ac switches direction every second.
what is a 3 core cable?
a cable with 3 wires.
what are the wire colours in a 3 core cable? (3)
brown. live
blue. neutral
green and yellow. earth
what is the purpose of the live wire?
to supply an alternating voltage. ~230V
what is the purpose of the neutral wire?
to complete the circuit with the live wire. 0V
what is the purpose of the earth wire?
provides a low resistance path for electricity to prevent the case of the appliance from becoming live after an electrical fault. 0V
what happens if you touch the live wire?
you die.
or get injured if youβre lucky
how do electrical appliances transfer energy?
charge does work against resistance.
what does high current produce?
high heat.
what is the formula for energy transferred?
energy transferred jules = power watts x time seconds
what is a power rating?
the amount of energy transferred per second.
what is the formula for energy transferred using voltage?
energy transferred jules = charge flow coulombs x volts
what happens when a charge goes through a change in voltage?
energy is transferred.
what is the formula for power using volts?
power watts = volts x current amps
what is the formula for power using resistance?
power watts = currentΒ² amps x resistance Ξ©
what is the national grid?
a system of cables and transformers that connects power stations to consumer.
why do power stations not run at maximum power?
so they can increase for high demand.
why do power lines work at very high voltages?
to minimise energy lost by heating. from high current (P=IV)
what is a transformer?
a device that increases or decreases the voltage of an ac.
what does a step up transformer do?
increases the voltage and decreases the current.
what does a step down transformer do?
decreases the voltage and increases the current.
