Electricity And Magnetism Flashcards
Diamagnetic vs Paramagnetic vs ferromagnetic:
- diamagnetic: all suborbitals filled > cannot be magnetized
- Paramagnetic: 1/2 suborbitals filled with random spin > overall no net dipole
Weak attraction to mag fields, can be temp polarized only in presence external field - ferromagnetic: unpaired electron stable, non-random spin and permanent magnet
Unit of measurement for magnetism:
- what is 1 unit equal to
Tesla = N s / C m
- thus only exert force on moving charges
- 1 T = 10K gauss
What is magnetism?
Produced by spin of elementary particles, usu electrons
Magnetic Field Equation:
B = u(0) I / 2 pi r R H rule: - thumb: current - curled fingers: direction field - tip: at you, X away from you (arrow flying away)
Force charge thru magnetic field formula:
What would create zero value for this force?
F = qvBsin theta
- charge 0, ,velocity 0, magnetic field = 0, direction parallel thus sin = 0
2nd right hand rule:
thumb: direction of charge
Fingers: direction of field
Palm: direction of force ( Pos = forward, neg = back)
How does circular motion relate to uniform field/grav field of:
F(c) = mv^2 / r = qvB r = mv/qB
What is Lorentz force?
Summation electrical and magnetic field components
What is the charge of an electron?
e = 1.6E-19
What is Coulomb’s law?
- think grav force
F = k q1q2/r^2
Force of Current carrying wire:
F = ILBsin theta
