Electricity Flashcards
Define: Free Electrons
Electrons dissociated from their nuclei, found in metals
Define: Static Electricity
The transfer of negatively charged electrons from one insulating material to another
Define: Current
The rate of flow of charge
Define: Potential Difference
The work done/energy transferred per coulomb of charge
Define: Thermistor
As temperature increases, resistance decreases (different to most components)
Define: Light Dependant Resistor
Resistance changes depending on light levels. The more light, the lower the resistance
Define: Ohm’s Law
The current through a resistor (at a constant temperature) is directly proportional to the potential difference across the resistor
Define: Resistance
Opposition to the flow of electric current
Define: Series Circuit
All the components are joined next to each other in a line
Define: Parallel Circuit
The components are joined in separate branches
Define: Filament Bulb
Emits light when a current flows through it. As current increases, temperature increases and resistance increases
Define: Diode
Only allows current to flow in one direction
Define: Light Emitting Diode
Only allows current to flow in one direction and emits light
Define: Variable Resistor
Resistance can be varied manually
Define: Voltmeter
Measures the potential difference across a component. Connected in parallel.
