electricity Flashcards
electrical hazards
- water in contact with something
- electrical device reaches high temp
- damaged equipment
- overloaded cables/sockets
- cables cause trip hazards
how does an earth wire work
provides a low resistance path for current so causes a large surge in earth and fuse breaks
what effect does resistant wires have on current
- causes electrical transfer
- due to electrons colliding with metal ions in wire
- heats up the wire
what colour is the live wire
brown
what colour is the neutral wire
blue
what colour is safety wire
yellow and green
difference between AC and DC
AC: alternating direction
DC: direct direction
what does short thick copper wire graph look like
steep diagonal line through the origin
what does filament lamp graph look like
curved line through the origin
what does long thin copper wire graph look like
not steep diagonal line through origin
what does diode graph look like
diagonal line starting half way on the x axis
how does resistance in a LDR differ
BRIGHT LIGHT = low resistance
vice versa
inversely proportional relationship
advantages of series circuit
- fewer wires
- lower resistance value
disadvantages of series circuit
- one component fails, all fail
- no independent control
advantages of parallel circuit
- independent control
- circuit doesn’t fail if one breaks
