electricity Flashcards
electron affinity
the tendency of a substance to hold on to the electrons. (usually seen in a chart of materials and their tendency to give electrons or gain electrons.)
conductivity
the ability of materials to allow electrons to move freely.
conductors
materials that allow electrons to change positions and are not tightly bound so they move away from the nuclei. (metals)
insulators
materials that hold onto electrons and do not allow them to move easily. and are tightly bound to the nuclei so they resist movement. (wood, rubber, and plastic)
static charge
the electric charge that builds up on the surface of an object.
secondary cell
a cell that can be recharged
voltaic cell
a source of energy that generates electric current through chemical reactions
battery
a connection between two cells
primary cell
a cell that can be used only once
fuel cell
a cell that generates electricity through chemical reactions of fuel stored outside the cell
electric circuit
a closed path along which electrons, powered by an energy source, can flow
electrode
one of two metal terminals in a cell or battery
electrolyte
a solution or paste that conducts charge
solar cell
a cell that converts sunlight into electric energy
