CHEMISTRY Flashcards
MATTER
anything that has mass and occupied space.
ATOMS
atoms make up matter. atoms are small particles you can’t see
MOLECULES
molecules are 2 or more atoms combined
solid
the particles are super close together and uniform
homogenous mixtures/solution
one phase. can’t see the individual parts. (ex. apple juice).
heterogeneous mixtures/mechanical mixtures
at less 2 phases. can see individual parts. (ex. vegetable soup or pizza).
alloys
mixtures of metals
combustion
combustion is a chemical reaction in which a fuel “burns” or reacts to oxygen
corrosion
corrosion is the breakdown of metals resulting from reactions with chemicals from the environment.
beneficial corrosion
metal reacting with O2 in the air to produce a tough outer oxide.
rust
corrosion of iron speeds up when in the presence of water and oxygen or electrolytes like salt.
gases in the atmosphere
78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 1% other
metalloids
have properties of both metals and non-metals
electrons
negative change (the # of protons is equal to # of electrons)
protons
positive charge (the # of protons is equal to # of electrons)
neutrons
neutral charge
atomic number
the number of protons in an atom’s nucleus
atomic mass
the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus
chemical formula
a notation that shows the type and number of atoms in a pure substance. ex. (N2 has 2 nitrogen or H2O has 2 hydrogen and 1 oxygen.)
molecular element
an element that has 2 of the same element (ex. N2, O2, H2, Cl2)
molecular compounds
molecular compounds consist of 2 or more elements. they form when non-metals react with non-metals
ionic compounds
they form when non-metals react with metal atoms. the compounds are made of charged particles called ions.
ions
ions form when an atom loses or gains one or more electrons without changing its number of protons.
cation
a positively charged ion. This happens when an atom loses its electrons but keeps the amount of protons.
anion
anion is a negatively charged ion. this happens when atoms gain negatively charged electrons.
