astronomy Flashcards
Comet
A small icy celestial body that when close enough to the sun releases gas.
Galaxy
A huge, rotating collection of gases, dust and billions of stars, planets and other celestial objects.
Solar System
The sun and all objects that travel around it.
Luminous
Producing and giving off light; shining.
Orbit
The closed path of a celestial object or satellite as it travels around another celestial object.
Star
A massive collection of gases held together by its own gravity and emitting huge amounts of energy.
Meteor
A sand to boulder-sized particle of debris in the solar system.
Moon
The only natural satellite of the earth.
Universe
Everything that exist, including all energy, matter, and space.
Asteroid
A small rocky celestial body found mainly between Mars and Jupiter.
Satellite
A celestial object that travels around a planet or dwarf planet.
Planet
A large, round celestial object that travels around a star.
Celestial Object
Any object that exist in space.
Astronomy
The scientific study of what is beyond the earth.
Sun
The star of our solar system.
Constellation
A group of stars that form an easily recognizable pattern that has a name attached to it.
lunar eclipse
The Earth blocks the moon from the sun so, you can’t see the moon
solar eclipse
the moon blocks the earth from the sun and makes an area on the earth dark.
umbra
the very dark areas during an eclipse
penumbra
the slightly dark areas during an eclipse
the suns core
the very hot center of the sun where nuclear fusion produces the sun’s energy
chromosphere
the sun’s inner atmosphere
corona
the hot outer put of the sun
The sun’s moving gases
temperature and pressure increase
the sun’s photosphere
called the surfaces of the sun but made of gases and not solid at all
solar flare
travels outwards from the chromosphere through the corona and only lasts a few minutes
solar prominence
large sheet of glowing gases burnt outwards from the chromosphere and lasts a few days or weeks
sunspots
huge darker and cool areas in the sun’s photosphere
