Electricity Flashcards
define current
a measure of the flow of electrons around the circuit
define potential difference
the force that drives the electrons
define resistance
everything that resists the flow of electrons
how is current measured
in amps, A
how is resistance measured?
in Ohms
how is potential difference measured?
in volts
in what direction does current flow?
from the positive terminal to the negative terminal
in a filament lamp graph why does the line get steeper
as the temperature increases, the resistance also increases meaning that there is less current flowing through.
why does the line in the diode only appear above the x axis?
there is really high resistance on the other side so current only flows in one direction and only appears on the positive side.
define charge
a measure of the total current that flows within a certain period of time.
what are the units for charge
Q, is measured in coulombs (C).
series circuit
- the potential difference of the battery is dhared across all the components
- current is the same everywhere
*
resistance
components with a greater resistance will have a higher share of volrage
parallel
the voltage is the same
* current is added up
* the more components added, the lower the total resistance
diode
only allows current to flow innone directin
