Q

How does an electron gun work?

A
  1. Metal plates are heated by a small wire that causes free floating electron in the lattice to gain Ek
  2. Electrons are ‘boiled off’, allowing them to move freely in a vacuum
  3. Electrons are pulled towards an anode and away from the cathode (wire), accelerating them
  4. Some electrons pass through a small hole as a beam

Q

What is a linear accelerator and how does it work?

A

It is a series of tubes that electrons travel through. They are connected to an alternating voltage.
As the electrons leave the tube it is repelled and attracted to the tube in front. The velocity increases in between tubes.
