Distortion
Changing the signal using the amp to ‘distort the sound’. It sounds crunchy, muddy, harsh and grungy!!
Reverb
Electronic effect to give the sense of a larger space. The sound carries on for a few seconds after. Can also be added to any instrument when recording.
Chorus
A guitar effect where the signal is doubled/delayed/detuned to give a warm, rich, wobbly sound.
Delay
The signal is repeated at a specific interval. Creates an echo.
Tremolo
Rapidly wobbles the pitch to give a warm, richer sound.
Palm mite
Pressing the palm on the strings near the bridge to give a percussive rhythmic effect. The sound doesn’t ring on.
Hammer on/Hammer off
Playing one note then using your left hand to ‘hammer on’ a second note without replucking the string.
Pitch bend
Literally bend the string upwards to increase the pitch
The synthesiser
Electronic keyboard instrument designed to produce electronic rather then imitate the sounds of real acoustic instruments.
Panning
Distributes the sound across the stereo spectrum. Sound moves from left to right.
Phaser
Electronic effect that produces a sweeping effect
A sample
A sample is a recorded fragment of sound that can then be used and manipulated.
Echo
Effect that repeats the sound with a delay.
