Electric Field Flashcards
State Coulomb’s law of electrostatics
It states that the magnitude of electric force between 2 point charges is directly proportional to the product of the magnitude of the charges and inversely proportional to the square of their separation.
Define an electric field
AN electric field is a region of space where an electric charge experiences an electric force.
Define electric field strength
It is the electric force exerted per unit positive charge, on small test charge placed at that point.
Define electric potential energy
EPE of a charge placed in an electric field is defined as the work done by an external agent in bringing the charge from infinity to that point in the field.
State what is meant by a line of force in a gravitational field.
Direction of force acting on a small test charge.
Define electric potential
Electric potential of a point in an electric field is the work done per unit positive charge by an external agent in bringing the small test charge from infinity to that point in the field.
State what is meant by a line of force in a electric field.
Direction of force acting on a positive test charge.
State a similarity of G force and E force
Both field strengths obey an inverse square law but with distance for both fields.
State a difference of G force and E force
Gfield is only attractive but Efield can be both attractive and repulsive.
