Advantage of using potentiometer over voltmeter.

A real voltmeter may have a high resistance, but it does not have infinite resistance. Hence there will be some current flow through the cell which causes a potential drop across its internal resistance, Voltmeter reading will be lower than actual emf of cell.

Potentiometer uses a null method which result in no current flow through the test cell, emf is measured accurately.
