What is a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI)?
GFCI, Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter is a fast-acting circuit breaker designed to shut off electrical power when it detects that a current is flowing along an unintended path such as a person, water, or a damaged electrical device. GFCIs required to be installed at all receptacles subject to moisture such as kitchens, baths, garages, and exterior outlets.
What is an Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI)?
Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) is a breaker designed to shut off power when it detects a dangerous electric arc in the circuit to help prevent fires. An AFCI distinguishes between a harmless arc typical to normal operation of switches, plugs, and motors, versus a potentially dangerous arc that can occur from a damaged or broken electrical device. AFCI breakers are required to be installed at all circuits except GFCIs and appliances.
