What is the electoral college?
a group of people (electors) in each state, selected to elect the President and Vice President
How does the electoral college work?
- 583 electors are elected to cast a ballot for a presidential candidate
- 583= 435(# of representatives)+100 senators in congress+ 3 for Washington DC (23rd amendment)
how many electors does each state receive?
number of electors is equal to number of congressmen
- Pa has 18 reps + 2 senators, so we have 20 electors
what is the electoral college?
- electoral college is compromised of a pool of electors that are chosen state by state to represent a political party that votes for the president in the December election.
- Each state is given number of electors equal to number of senators + representatives
- more population, the more electors
what do the results from the november election dictate?
which political parties electors are chosen to vote in the electoral college in December
- if the popular vote is Republican, than republican-party affiliated electors would vote republican, and democratic would not vote, and vice vera
